More about Morgan Dollar

The Morgan dollar is a silver one dollar coin originating from the United States that was minted between 1878 and 1904 and again for a year in 1921. The designer of this coin was George T. Morgan which is where its name comes from. The composition of this coin is ninety percent silver and ten percent copper and was minted at four different American mints including the Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco mints. This was the first dollar that was made for commercial use in America since the 1873 Seated Liberty Dollar even though the Trade dollar was minted during this time. That particular coin was actually made for different purposes.

In 1918, over 270 million silver coins were to be melted for their silver but in 1921, the mint started to product this Morgan coin for a year before it was replaced by the Peace dollar. Since the last year that the Morgan coin was minted, many of these coins have been melted making these harder to find. Those that are still in existence are used mostly as collectables. Those with errors or those made in lesser amounts are considered to have higher values than the regularly minted coins.
