More about Peace Dollar

The Peace dollar was minted in the United States between the years 1921 and 1928, right after the Morgan dollar. It was then minted again in 1934 and 1935. There were proposals to have this coin issued as a commemorative for the end of the First World War but it was put into circulation instead. It was then minted again in 1965 for a short period of time but was dated for 1964. There were 45 million of these coins approved for mintage despite the shortage of that metal. Those that were minted the last time were not released to the public and they were claimed to have been melted. This is the last silver dollar coin that has been minted for the United States.

The coin was designed by Anthony de Francisci and was named Peace because he placed that word underneath the bald eagle on the reverse side of the coin. The obverse side features Lady Liberty. The composition of this coin is ninety percent silver and ten percent copper. Even though the design of the coin was criticized by many, it is looked at as a fine piece of art today and holds a nice monetary and historical value to it. The proofs that were minted in 1921 and 1922 were valued at up to $50,000 in 2006.
