More about Silver Dragon

Silver dragon coins are among the oldest coins made and distributed throughout the country as a form of official currency. These coins are among the few currencies which remind the world of how China used to be a flourishing economy during its time, and they as well serve to be a symbol of the Chinese as a unified nation. These coins began to be produced back in 1889, and the first coins minted had the price of seven mace and two candareens. These were the two values used as standard units of silver, and they were measurable by weight. The design of the coins was that of a Chinese dragon engraved in the center, and they usually weigh 27.4 grams and contain 0.78 ounce of silver. On top of the engraved dragon is a landscape of Huh-Peh province, in which most historians claim to be where the coins were minted. The coins were in circulation from 1898 to 1905, and became known as Kiang-Nan bucks. Purchasing silver dragon coins can be very expensive, not to mention difficult. Since they are already rare, most collectors stumble upon fakes as they are cheaper on the budget. Hence, when buying such coins, it is best to find a credible dealer and examine the coins yourself. Authentic silver dragon coins are heavier, not to mention more solid than counterfeit ones. It is also discouraged to purchase these coins through auction sites as you can never be sure if you are dealing with a bogus dealer, and you may receive fake coins later on.
